Polaris IV, Caroline’s Star

OOC (Out of Character): At the moment, I’m unable to explain how Katia came to be in the Polaris system lorewise from an in character perspective. If that changes in the future, then I may come back and write about the experience through her eyes. For now, I wanted to go ahead and share what a great time I had touring the system with CCP Falcon and some pictures I took along the way.

DISCLAIMER: I’m no Mark726 of Eve Travel. His journal is far more elegant than mine and be sure to check out his latest entry about the Memorial! Fantastic write-up and much appreciated, never thought I’d be the subject of one of his journal entries. I’ve always said he’s the National Geographic of New Eden and I’m more along the lines of the Griswold family vacation. 😉 Which also means I’m no Razorien when it comes to astrophotography. My Gallery has always been more about quantity rather than quality. Be sure to check out his awesome images from the Great Fleet, which is when Signal Cartel and I visited my last system, Redoubt, and celebrated. In both cases journaling and picture taking were more about documenting my journey rather than producing quality work. So, if you’re looking for quality, I’ll always point to Mark726 and Razorien. 😉

CCP Falcon

It was Wednesday, March 20th, and it was time for the Magical Mystery Tour to begin from my home station and our new Signal Cartel office of Perkone Factory, Moon 4, Saisio VIII. CCP Falcon was busy getting things in order as I patiently waited in hangar, looking over Voyager, my trusted Astero that was the ship that helped me to complete the Empire portion of my journey. Voyager was sporting my “One Eden” skin for that’s how I see New Eden, as one. To me, the stars are open for all to see. There are no boundaries, empires, or megacorps, there’s only the cluster and the journey to see it all.

Polaris Welcome & Hugs

Jumping on voice comms with Falcon, it wasn’t long before my trip began. One moment, I was in station, the next I was warping in space in the middle of Polaris. The surrounding star fields and nebula background were familiar, yet different, like Caroline’s Star which was much bigger in the sky. I had to pause and take it all in, almost forgetting to take some pictures, before finally accepting the invite to fleet up and warp to Falcon. Now truth be told, I suspected there would be a welcoming fleet of a few devs and GM’s, maybe a half dozen or so, and I wasn’t disappointed. What did surprise me was how many there were, which was around 30 or so. Lots of welcomes, salutes, congratulations were had and even a few who quoted Carl Sagan (GM IceCream) as well as some saying they were fans of mine who had been following me for some time. Of course, I’m just fanning out see all the names in local and flabbergasted a few of them were fanning out over me. Just seemed so backwards. 😊

This lasted for a few moments then I believe it was CCP Explorer that said “Astero on dscan, then GM Stardust spoke up and said “Astero is primary”, and lastly CCP Sledgehammer that said “Overheat your love!” and the fireworks began. LOL, I dare say their fireworks outdid our signature Signal Cartel Hugs fleet. It was close, as they also blotted out my ship in the glow, so I’ll just say it’s a toss-up. 😉 This carried on for a little while, but it was time for them to get back to more important things like getting ready for the upcoming Evesterdam, so we said our goodbyes, at least I think I did, I was still somewhat in shock, I don’t think I said nearly enough to thank all of them for their hard work and dedication to create the immersive SciFi universe of New Eden that we all know and love.

Polaris VI, Game Master Health Spa

Next up was the tour as Falcon lead me around the system, planet by planet, station by station, structures, and finally the sun. It was funny, he was telling me that before I came to visit, he had to go around the system and clean house and update some “names” of “things” as they were rather “creative”. LOL. I always hate having to clean house before company comes over, but I get it and as an IT professional myself, former developer, I know in test systems I’ve worked on in the past I’ve also had some “creative” names for some “things”. So, I can only imagine.

Polaris VII, Team Security Clubhouse

For those not familiar, Polaris is one of the 230 player unreachable systems out near Jove space and it is considered the home and headquarters for CCP in game. Those systems are not connected to New Eden or to each other in anyway, no gates, no wormholes. There once were gates that connected them to each other (but not New Eden), but they went “offline” or were destroyed when Caroline’s Star exploded. I believe that knowledge is OOC. The systems are used by CCP Dev’s and GM’s for testing. During patch deployments to the server when you see it coming back online after down time, you may have noticed the player count say VIP and a number showing there are folks in game. That’s the Dev’s in the test systems (Jove Space and Polaris) checking things out first before opening up the server to the rest of us. Lorewise, Falcon didn’t know if the stations and structures were actually in the system or not or what state anything would be in, so again, this is all out of character.

Polaris VIII, Game Masters Biomass Processing Facility

So, what is there? According to the in game map’s description Polaris is “This is not the system you are looking for”. It’s in Region UUA-F4, constellation 9RW5-Z. There are 9 planets, 6 asteroid belts, stations located at the first 4 planets, and structures around planets 6, 7, and 8 as follows: Planet VI “Game Master Health Spa”, Planet VII “Team Security Clubhouse”, and Planet VIII “Game Masters Biomass Processing Facility”. I can only imagine what they were named before. 😊

Polaris V, ESRC deployed!
Polaris III

Falcon took me to each of the planets, stations, and structures and I’ve included my favorite images here. I also managed to drop one of our, Signal Cartel’s, EvE Scout Rescue Caches at planet V. 😉 It contained an assortment of probes, launcher, fireworks, and a Fedo. (I think, lol, this getting old and forgetful is annoying.) Then before docking up, we journeyed to gaze upon the sun of Polaris. With some magical mystery dust, Falcon managed to get me even closer than what would be normal for a typical warp in. Just an amazing view and amazing time.

Polaris

But all good things must come to an end and so it was for me as I was instructed to dock up, sternly warned to not set a clone 😉 and I was teleported back to my home station with all modules intact and in functioning order. All in all, it was good to be back home, but I’ll never forget my visit to Polaris with CCP Falcon, the Dev’s, and the GM’s. Seeing that distant star up close and personal will forever be the highlight of my 9 year long journey.

Polaris VII

I’m curious to see if CCP does somehow explain the visit in lore. They opened the door to that possibility in the Scope ticker when the Sisters of Eve confirmed my journey to every known system and “beyond”. I’m not concerned either way, it would be great from a roleplayer’s perspective, but at the same time I understand as well. How would it even be possible? How’d I get there? What was really there? How’d I get back? I guess that’s the mystery part of the tour. 😉

Coming up, I plan to start posting about the behind the scenes effort that took place to help me secure the last 600 wormhole systems with the help of my corp, Signal Cartel, without them even knowing what it all was really about. Then I’ll follow that with my thank you post(s) and what’s next.

In the words of Caroline Grace from Twitter, the discover of Caroline’s Star, “Big things have small beginnings!” and this was certainly one of those.

Wanted to provide a quick monthly update. So far, I’ve been able to maintain my goal of 3 new systems explored daily on average. If I can continue to hold this pace, then it’s my hope I’ll be able to lay out and present an aggressive plan to finish during the last quarter of this year. Stay tuned.

To date, overall, I’ve explored 6,449 systems out of 8,035 making that 80% of all New Eden. That includes 1,248 systems out of 2,604 for 47.9% of wormhole space.

J103242 III

Exploration. Exploring: to traverse for the purpose of discovery. Discovering: gain sight or knowledge of something previously unseen or unknown. Are we, as New Eden capsuleers, explorers? There are a total of 8,035 systems in the New Eden cluster. 5,201 Known space systems (K-Space), 2,604 Wormhole space systems (W-Space), and 230 unreachable Jove space systems. With the exception of Jove space, capsuleers routinely visit each and every one of these known systems that were previously discovered long ago. No new insights, no new knowledge, the same old suns day in and day out.

J164147 XI

Our current level and access to ship and gate technology doesn’t allow us to reach the nearby Jove systems, let alone expand beyond our current accessible known systems. So, no, we’re not explorers, not truly at least according to the definition. The age of exploration is long past until a new age can begin when advances in tech open the gates to systems beyond our current reach. Then, there will be another great rush to explore.

Yet, I still call myself an explorer of New Eden. Why? Simply because, even though there are no new unseen or unknown systems to reach, for those that I’ve not visited yet, they are unknown and unseen by me. Exploration in New Eden is a journey into one’s self, very much a personal endeavor, as it stands today. The thrill of seeing a new sun I’ve not seen before, still conveys the same feelings of awe and grandness as the new first one I visited in my home system of Saisio when I began.

J212302 VI

Today, I’ve just completed my 900th W-Space system which means I’m now one third complete with wormhole space, just over 34%. That brings my total systems explored, which includes K-Space, to 6,104 or 76% of all of New Eden. Perhaps the most remarkable aspect of my journey so far is not the number of systems I’ve visited, but the fact I’ve not lost a ship as of yet.

((OOC: Sorry for the long delay between updates. It’s summer time now, at last, and hopefully that means real life commitments will ease up and give me some time to post a little more often. I’m going go for at least once a month updates, if nothing else.))

“Katia, that makes your six-thousandth system explored”, Aura stated in her monotone voice then paused. “and you are not dead yet.”

I raised an eyebrow at Chester, my slaver hound, who only looked at me with indifferent eyes, while his head rest between his massive paws spread out in front of him laying down on the cabin floor. I continued to stare, which only provoked him to raise his head, with what seemed like a smile on his face, until he realized there was no treat involved from my look.

Dumbfounded, I replied, “Aura, are you developing a sense of humor?”

“Developing would imply growth, evolving, a period of time to study and become better at a given task.” Aura continued in her iterative explanation. “I assure you, I need no such process.”

I chuckled, mostly to myself, even though Chester cocked his head, dropping his jaw into a pant, in anticipation that a treat was forthcoming.

“Katia? I fail to see the humor in your reaction.”

“Exactly!” I proclaimed. “Which tells me all I need to know.”

“Katia, if I may…” Aura persisisted.

“No, you may not.” I grinned as I knew if I didn’t stop her now, she would never cease to explain. “Six-thousandth system, huh? I guess this does call for a celebration.”

Now it was Chester’s turn to raise an eyebrow my way as I reached in a drawer behind me and tossed him treat.

“Congratulations Chester, we’re not dead yet.”

To be called a Stargazer by my homeworld, Achura (Saisio III)… that would be the pinnacle of all that I could achieve. I’m not one for stereotypes, they generalize far too much and individualization is lost. Yet, I can’t deny how typical I am of my kind. At least if you believe all that you learn about the Achur from the widely available public resources.

It is true: I am reclusive. I am an introvert. I have little interest in material things. I am deeply spiritual. I do desire to unlock the secrets of New Eden. I am one of those Achur pilots you’ve heard about that has left the confines of our homeworld and have set sail for the stars.

For those that don’t know me or my mission, you can learn more from one of those public resources. I’m currently in Phase III of my mission, which is to visit every system in New Eden. Phase I, Empire Space, began on December 1st, yc111 (2009) and was completed on July 4th, yc116 (2014). Phase II, Null Sec began on July 9th, yc116 (2014) and was completed on November 26th, yc117 (2015).

J104632 VII

On January 3rd, yc118 (2016), I began Phase III, to explore all of wormhole Space (W-Space). My first stop was Thera, where I was welcomed by my corp, Signal Cartel, and after the celebrations, I set sail to continue my main mission. I spent the first few months based out of Thera. It was only after a week of exploring W-Space from Thera, that I encountered my first duplicate system, a system I had already visited. After encountering more and more duplicate systems over the next couple of months, I decided it was time to wander. I spent maybe a month wandering from hole to hole, before settling into a class 5 wormhole that appeared to not be lived in that contained a class 6 static connection. I wanted to focus on class 6 wormholes and see how many I could find based out of one system. I spent about 6 months, between that wormhole, a little more wandering, and then settling into another class 5 with a class 6 connection. Somewhere during that time, I changed out ships as well, from my Tengu to a Raptor, in order to take advantage of the small wormhole connection types. The time was well worth it as I did find 90 out of the 118 class 6 wormholes, but it was very slow going.

Too slow, really. As a comparison, you can see I discovered a total of 529 wormhole systems during yc118. Compared to my progress from the prior two years in

J161119 VI, Moon 1, Pioneer

K-Space, which was over 2,000 systems per year for yc116 and yc117, I’m now exploring at a quarter of the speed that I was before. With there being 2,604 wormhole systems that we know of, this journey at this pace will take another 4 years and that’s not taking into account the difficulty to find the systems I need in a timely manner. As more and more systems are found, the hay stack grows, and the needle becomes more difficult to find.

As I let that sink in, but before I could spiral down the hole to where those thoughts were leading me, Chester nudged me in the back. Chester, the slaver hound gift that Mynxee gave me when I visited Thera, before I departed for this phase of my journey. I named him after my Grandfather and he, like my Grandfather, have been an inspiration to me to keep going. There really couldn’t have been a better gift, because at times when I’ve sailed too close to the abyss and think my mind is lost, Chester is there… encouraging me… “my little Stargazer.”

EVE Travel Rest Stop

Yesterday, The Evesploratory Society opened another Citadel called EVE Travel Rest Stop in honor of Mark726’s blog EVE Travel. This is not the first citadel opened by the Evesploratory Society, the first, called The Explorers Club, was opened for all explorers of New Eden and is located in orbit around Mista VI. As Mark Vulpine mentioned in his post about the opening of the new citadel, if you’ve been an explorer for any amount of time, then you’ve surely heard of Mark726 and EVE Travel. Mark726’s blog about sightseeing in New Eden is top notch, there are none that come close to the level of information, presentation, and professionalism. I’ve often said that his blog is the National Geographic of New Eden whereas mine is more like the Griswold Family Vacation. I interviewed him as part of my New Eden Explorers series which you can read more about him here, New Eden Explorers: Mark726.

Signal Cartel Hugs Fleet

Signal Cartel Hugs Fleet

The new citadel is located in the Jakanerva system in the Forge which is the home system of the Marcus Yeon monument that honors all explorers of New Eden. You can read more about that, you guessed it, here on EVE Travel’s blog. Of course, for the grand opening of the Citadel and ribbon cutting ceremony, the famous (or infamous) Signal Cartel Hugs Fleet was on hand gladly showering Mark726 with fireworks and snowballs of which I took Pioneer out for the festivities. How could I not? I’m just one of many who’ve been inspired by Mark726’s blog and wanted to show my support and appreciation for his hard work and dedication to the EVE community.

Congratulations to Mark726 and a job well done to Markus Vulpine on the opening of Evesploratory’s EVE Travel Rest Stop.

As to where have I been lately? My wormhole exploration journey continues as I’ve recently passed 400 wormholes systems explored. Making that roughly 70% of all New Eden systems visited. My blogging has slowed due to real life stuff going on. I’m finally getting around to analyzing the data for Project “W”, which is where I’m trying to determine just how random finding wormholes systems are or not. I had a lot of Signal Cartel corp mates to help gather the data to possibly help answer the questions that came about from my blog post, W-Space – Why you not random? I’ve learned that I’m not the only one who’s wondered and made similiar observations. I hope to have a blog up on the results of that preliminary data gathering soon. So, I’m still here, quietly wandering around the New Eden cluster, jumping in when and where I can.

When I began my exploration of wormhole space just a little over three months ago, I had decided to base out of Thera. I felt it was a great place to start with random wormholes appearing daily. Being a member of Signal Cartel brings the benefit that most would be scouted already and taking advantage of that, I could quickly knockout several systems daily. Then I’d have to resort to scanning on my own which takes some time. With over 2,500 wormhole systems and assuming complete randomness with the connections, statistically, it should’ve been some time before I started finding systems that I’ve previously visited. At least that was the theory. But there’s something odd going on in wormhole space and it’s not the space affects that I’m talking about. The randomness of wormholes connections in each system doesn’t seem to be so random after all.

J102844 VI, Moon 1

J102844 VI, Moon 1

On my tenth day into exploring W-Space while based in Thera, I encountered my first duplicate system. I had only previously explored a total of 17 systems, so my chances of finding a duplicate system should have been less than 1%. Yes, I hear you and understand, less than 1% chance is still a chance, so with a raised eyebrow, I continued to base from Thera. But here’s the thing, as I proceeded to explore, duplicate systems kept coming up, beating the odds of finding them until finally at the end of March with only 10% of W-Space explored, my odds of seeing duplicates seemed closer to 30%. I decided to forgo basing in Thera and have been wandering ever since.

Now with my supposedly random wandering it gets more interesting. This last week, just the last few days really, has convinced me of the not so randomness of W-Space, that there’s a pattern to the chaos. One day, I hit system after system that I had previous explored, until finally I found one I had not. It was around ten systems, making that day’s odds over 90% likely to find systems I’ve already been to. What? How? It gets more interesting. The next day, I found system after system I had NOT been to yet, making that day’s odds over 90% likely to find systems I’ve NOT already been to. Very odd.

J115909

J115909

I don’t have an answer, so what am I proposing? I believe wormhole systems cluster together and connect more often than not to the same systems over and over again. Granted, I believe the clusters are rather large groups, maybe upwards to 600 or even 700 systems or so, but based on my experience so far, it would fit the odds I’ve been experiencing.

I’d be curious to hear from folks that actually have lived in a single wormhole system for a long period of time. Have you noticed or have you seen yourself connecting to the same systems over a period of several months? It’d be difficult to prove and take a lot of observation from multiple systems, but it is interesting never the less.

Fly Clever!
Katia

UPDATE: After some discussion on Twitter and further reflection, the more I’m beginning to think there may be a light year limit between systems and their ability to connect to each other via wormholes regardless if they’re K-Space or W-Space.

Two hundred wormhole systems explored and a couple of thousand to go. Several folks have asked me: what is my goal, how many wormhole systems per day was I hoping to explore. My reply was honest, I had no goal per se. However, I was hoping to keep my previous pace from known space which was 6 to 8 systems per day on average. With two months and 200 systems, my pace has been steady, but it’s half of what I had achieved before. Well what does that mean? Instead of taking a year at the least to find the 2,604 wormhole systems I need to explore, it’s looking like at a minimum of two years and that’s “IF” I find all the systems I need to when I need to and keep my current pace of 3 to 4 a day. That’s unlikely, as I’m already hitting a fair number of duplicate systems I’ve been to already.

What’s really odd is, I’ve only explored 8% of wormhole space, but this last week, it seems my odds of finding a system I’ve already been to has been closer to 30%. One would think I should be encountering about 1 in 10, but it’s been closer to 3 or 4 in 10. There must be something to that, something strange. It does seem I find systems clustered together and not by constellation or region. Once I find 1 I’ve been to, I find many. By the same token, when I find 1 I’ve not been to, I find similar. Groups and clusters… odd and not what I was expecting.

J002625

J002625

Something else too and this should come as no surprise, but it was pleasant to see, like known space and the familiar background nebulas found in each region, the same can be said of wormhole space. I’m sure that’s what played into the classifications of them, it’s an easy means to identify them. In a future blog entry, I’ll post them up. There are still some regions I’ve not found yet and I’d like a chance to include them as well. If you’re curious, you can check them out here.

I’ve heard it said that slow and steady wins the race, but this isn’t a race nor are there any prizes. I’ll just keep at it to appease the explorer within me. Fly clever!

Signal Cartel Tower

On 20.1.yc118 (January 20th, 2016), Signal Cartel had its first birthday and today, I celebrate my 1 year anniversary as a Signaleer. What an amazing year it has been. The corporation grew quickly, far faster than I would have ever thought. I think when I joined, we had less than 10 capsuleers and today the corp stands at 740+ members which is where we’ve been holding steady at for a while now. Like Mynxee, whom I’ve heard comment along the same lines, I never would have dreamed there’d be that many explorers of New Eden that would join up in a corp together. For the most part, exploration is very much a solo’ers endeavor. We’ve had many to come and go, which is to be expected and I’m honored to be among 7 of us that are celebrating our first year in the corp this month.

So, why or what is it that draws capsuleers to Signal Cartel? I can only speak for myself, but I do believe in the beginning it was the credo that spoke to many of us. We also had EvE-Scout’s solid reputation with the Thera scouting service as well as Mynxee’s reputation as an experienced and solid corporation CEO. (Albeit, a former but now reformed pirate with an explorer’s heart! *hugs*) SC Home IIIt was a year ago I posted “Can’t stop the Signal”, which has become our unofficial motto, and it speaks to what I saw in the corp’s potential and why I joined. Just the day before, Mynxee posted “Another Exciting Sandcastle”. It certainly has been and continues to be! Nothing has changed at all and I couldn’t be any happier with my decision and it’s such a pleasure to see so many that share the same heart as I.

Today, I believe it’s our size and reputation as a home to explorers that draws others to us. That’s not a problem per say, but it does present challenges from some (not all) of our newer members that question our credo whom you can tell just glanced over it. I’m glad to see our leadership has held firm to our core beliefs and have sought to keep our reputation as neutral explorers with integrity as our primary goal, rather than bending the credo to make everyone happy. It tells me we are a corp that seeks like-minded quality members and not a corp that’s about quantity. That’s not to say to those members who have left are not quality members, far from it. It simply means our home was not in tune with their heart and they have moved on to find their own home.

This last year for me personally, I’ve seen the conclusion of my K-Space exploration and the beginning of wormhole space. I’m now just over 100 wormholes explored, including Signal Cartel’s home system of Thera as well as our wormhole system that our POS is located, which I’ll not name. Special shout-out and thanks to Dorian Reu, who scouted me into our POS home system and gave me the tour. Today’s images are from there.

“Well Chief,” I paused and forced a quick smile, “this is it.”

He smiled in return, but his eyes told the truth, “Listen kiddo, I understood when you were exploring known space it made sense you would station as needed where ya were. I even understood while you were out in Null Sec, ya had no choice but to shut down your systems in space, exit your pod, to get some down time, so you wouldn’t have to travel and station in Empire.” He paused long enough to sigh before continuing. “But for wormhole space, ya know right? That you can base out of here, Saisio, your home? Those holes wander. You know that, right?”

“I do.” I tried to force my smile again, goodbyes were always difficult, but I hoped he could see the spark in my eyes for the next phase of my journey. “But that’s the point. I am going home.”

“To Thera?” He scoffed, something he rarely did with me. “I don’t get how you can call a place home, if ya ain’t never been there.”

I’ve never been happier since before my Grandfather passed away. They’re my family now, besides you of course.” I winked. “And Thera is our, Signal Cartels, home. I know Grandfather would have no issue with me declaring it as such for myself.”

Chief knew he didn’t have a leg to stand on. “Naw, I reckon he wouldn’t and he’d be damn proud of ya too for what you just accomplished.” He offered his hand in resignation. “You fly clever now, Ma’am.”

I batted it aside and wrapped him up in a big hug. Well, as big as I could manage for my tiny frame and his broad shoulders. “Thanks for getting the ‘Wanderer’ ready. Be sure to dust off ‘Jester’s Trek’ from time to time, alright?”

He nodded and I could’ve sworn I saw a hint of a tear in his eyes. “Gesh Chief, I’ll be stopping by more often, those holes do wander, ya know?” I used his own words against him.

“Wha…? Riiiight, just somethin’ in my eye is all.” He winked.

I didn’t linger for long as time was running short and I had made arrangements with Mynxee, Signal Cartel’s CEO, for a sendoff get together with my new family in Thera. Having been in the corporation for almost a year now, I had yet to make an official, let alone a formal, event. Rather difficult for me as I had decided once I started my exploration of Null Sec, I wasn’t stopping until I had finished. Ironic, that I did break away from Null sec and returned to Empire once just long enough to join Signal Cartel to begin with.

With one last look at ‘Jester’s Trek’ sitting in the next bay, the ship that had faithfully served me well in Null, I turned and faced my new tengu, ‘Wanderer’. Nearly identical to my previous one, but with one special modification to the launchers. I was rather looking forward to seeing them in action soon. I couldn’t help but smile at the thought. I’ve heard some great stories about our signature fleet, but have yet to be a part of one, let alone be on the receiving end. So, I had no doubts about the good time that was ahead me.

Eager to be about it and as quickly as I could, I boarded the ‘Wanderer’, prepped the pod which was already mounted and locked in with the ship, and disrobed before descending into the preheated podgoo. Having been out of the pod for over a month now, I had forgotten just how soothing and relaxing the goo could be. At least up until the point when you first get jacked into the ships systems which no matter how much you mentally prepared yourself for, it would always come as a shock to your senses. But as with most things with time and experience, the shock and nausea seemed to fade just a little bit faster than the last time. Such was the case this time around and I began my preflight system checks and departure request before the last imaginary ball of light faded into nothingness behind my eyelids.

As usual and as expected, the Chief had the ‘Wanderer’ in top notch condition, readied, and primed to go. Like ‘Jester’s Trek’, the ‘Wanderer’ was a specially modified Tengu. The Chief was a bit of an expert when it came to automated shipboard functions and he had a talent for making the impossible work. Before I even began my explorations, it was important to me that no one risk their life for mine. For the frigates I flew, that wasn’t a problem as their size didn’t often require crew members, but the strategic cruiser offered the challenge of figuring out how to operate it without a crew. Typically, a ship of its size required 30 to 50 crew members to operate effectively. I knew I just wouldn’t be able to fly it with any chance at all that someone could die on my behalf if I were caught exploring and yet I would survive because of the pod and the cloning technology. I honestly didn’t understand how others could do it with any sort of conscience or lack of survivor’s guilt.

From what the Chief told me, the solution was rather elegant, but not one that I could even explain, so I won’t try. Suffice it to say, since I didn’t demand ammo reloads for the launchers, I figured I’m cloned anyway if I’m caught, as well as giving up a lot of extra eyes to watch various sensors and no damage control, and … I could go on, he managed to get the ship operational with only myself on board. Not only that, he was also able to rig up a means for me to enter and exit the pod while on ship.

Now when I say rigged up, that’s exactly how it looked on ‘Jester’s Trek’, sort of a hastily throw together controls and robotic assist, pumping systems, goo refresh tanks, and so on. But on the ‘Wanderer’, he really took it up top notch. The pod area looked more like a first class suite on an interstellar passenger cruise ship. Gone were all the hanging wires, hoses, arms, and what nots. Now all that was tucked away, out of sight, comfortably part of the ship instead of looking all tossed in hap hazard. The Chief certainly out did himself this time around. Grandfather would be proud of his old friend.

It was time that I got a move on, I didn’t want to be late for my first corp fleet-up, especially since Mynxee was leading it and it would be my first time meeting her since I joined the corp. I have to admit, I was a bit nervous, but really not sure why as it seemed like I already knew her. Perhaps from another life or perhaps she simply had a way to make those around her comfortable. Whatever the reason, if my hands had been on controls, they would have been shaking. As it was, I only had to give it a thought and I departed the station with no issues.

Thanks to the EVE-Scout services that are freely open to all capsuleers of New Eden, I was able to pin point an entry wormhole to Thera that was only 17 systems away. I had no trouble at all navigating through Empire space, finally finding myself in a low security system that contained the wormhole. Since Signal Cartel is part of the EVE-Scout Alliance and we’re home to many scouts and explorers from all over New Eden, there was already a bookmark in my navigational subsystem that contained the coordinates to the Thera entrance. In my excitement, I failed to use my directional scanner to check before I warped to the navpoint, but I at least had enough wits about me to land well short of the entrance to have a look before going in.

Thankfully I did as there was a svipul, a tactical destroyer, loitering around the wormhole entrance. ‘Whew’ I thought to myself, knowing that could’ve been really bad, but having been in this same scenario countless times and the fact there seemed to be only one ship, I knew patience would win the day. The wormhole ended up being a rather busy one with several ships exiting, but my patience paid off, the svipul left, and after I was given the all clear for the Thera side of the wormhole, I entered and found myself home for the first time.

I joined our waiting fleet, warped to Mynxee, and there are simply no words for what happened next. If you’ve never been a part of a Signal Cartel Hugs fleet either on the giving or the receiving end, there’s just no experience like it in all of New Eden. I’ve seen many sights, I’ve met a lot of capsuleers, but none of those experiences came close to the warm welcome and the camaraderie I experienced being among my corps mates as we launched snowballs and fireworks at each other. I know, I know, it sounds corny, like some game you’d play as a child, and perhaps there is some silliness to it, but it was absolutely a great time and we all really enjoyed it.

I wish I could remember all that attended, but I know if I tried to start and list them off, I’d miss some, so I won’t even try. Hopefully they’ll understand if I missed a wave or a signing off, a comment made, or a question asked. It was difficult to keep track of all the coms among the many, many fireworks and snowballs that were blasting around me.

We carried on as a fleet for much longer than I would have thought we could. Making our way to Thera’s sun at one point, then back out to a safer location again. We shared many laughs, stories, thoughts, questions, and simply enjoyed each other’s company. For the first time, in a long time, I felt very much a child surrounded by the comfort of my home with my family. I could feel my Grandfather’s arms hugging me tightly. Even though I could feel his presence, I wish he could have been there.

As the events of the evening began to fade and we all had other responsibilities we needed to attend to, Mynxee requested that we dock our ships together before departing. She said something about supplies she wanted to pass along before I began my exploration of wormhole space, the next phase of my personal journey. Interesting, because I had not requested any supplies, but ships docking in space was not an uncommon occurrence for crewed vessels. It was, however, rather odd for capsuleers because of the nature of the pods and leaving the ship completely dead in space while not actively piloting. Not to mention doing so in Thera could prove deadly. I was also a little nervous trying the maneuver without a crew. But the thought of telling my CEO no was the same as if I were telling the same to my Grandfather. First off, he wouldn’t accept it so why would Mynxee and second of all, I wouldn’t be able to bring myself to say it – out loud that is.

After a few nerve racking moments of minutely controlling my ships thrusters without the aid of a crew, we managed to dock. Perhaps in record time, I disengaged from my pod, showered, and put on my new dress and shoes I had bought myself as a present for completing my Null Sec explorations. I would much rather wait for my CEO than have her waiting on me. Her time is valuable, I know, and there was no way I would keep her longer than necessary if I could help it. At least, I knew she had to go through the same process as I being a capsuleer herself and I hoped I was a little quicker.

Turns out I was ready first so I went over different greetings in my head while I waited at the airlock. ‘It’s a pleasure, Mynxee’ Hmm, too informal. ‘It’s nice to finally meet you face to face, Ms. President’. Is that what you call a CEO? Doesn’t sound right. ‘My Lady Mynxee, it’s an honor to meet you.’ Good grief, now I’m just sounding silly.

Then the hatch opened and there she was. I froze, eyes wide and jaw locked, and only after a few moments did I finally manage to extend my hand in greeting without saying a word.

She batted my hand aside and wrapped me up in a hug.

I was home.

“I got you a present, I hope you don’t mind,” Mynxee said releasing me from the hug, “Someone to help you endure those long stretches without company while exploring wormhole space.”

“Someone?” I replied with a bit of concern. “Mynxee, I ah… don’t really need a…”

“Here boy!” Mynxee yelled out, whistled sharply, then pointed at me.

From around the corner, in what seemed like slow motion to me, a rather large form appeared, bounding as it charged. So quick was it, my only reaction was a blink of my eyes before it was on me. HSlaverHounduge paws upon my shoulders, for the beast was nearly as big as I, it proceeded to open its maw full of teeth as long as my fingers, and just when I thought I was surely done for, it proceeded to lick the length of my face. I busted out laughing, most un-lady like, and threw my arms around the slaver hound, thinking that petting him would calm him down. It didn’t.

“You’ll have to name him, of course.“ Mynxee said. “Any thoughts?”

After a few moments, I finally managed to ease him down off my shoulders, but he insisted I continued to pet and rub his back with the threat that if I didn’t he’d jump up again. So I did as he wished with a huge smile on my face. The last time I had a pet I was a child and the thought never crossed my mind to have one on board ship. Since I would be able to enter and exit the pod freely, I could take care of him. We would be able to keep each other company while wandering the stars. I’ll have to see if the Chief can come up with a pod-like kennel that could possibly survive and be retrieved in the event my ship was caught and destroyed. Sounds like some more rigging in the Chief’s future. The more I thought about it the more I realized it was possible to have a pet.

“A name…” there was only one name that came to mind. The only name that made sense. A name that to me meant comfort, love, and that special feeling of home. “I’ll name him after my Grandfather.”

The slaver hound cocked its head slightly sideways, then looked from me to Mynxee and back again.

I smiled and replied, “Chester.”
